Presidio County

Marfa, Texas

The county seat of Presidio County, Texas is Marfa. It was established in 1883 as a water stop for the Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio Railway. In 1885, Marfa became the county seat after voters decided to move it from Fort Davis. A new courthouse was built in Marfa in 1885 to solidify its new role as the center of county government

  • Judd Foundation: Explore Donald Judd's living and working spaces, providing a firsthand experience of his art and vision.
  • Ballroom Marfa: A contemporary art center showcasing rotating exhibits and performances, often featuring site-specific installations.
  • Prada Marfa: A captivating and surreal art installation of a faux Prada store in the desert, a popular spot for photos.
  • Art Galleries: Downtown Marfa has numerous art galleries featuring diverse works from various artists.
  • Marfa and Presidio County Museum: Learn about the rich history of Marfa and the surrounding area, from its beginnings as a railroad stop to its modern art scene


Nature and Outdoors:

  • Marfa Mystery Lights: Witness the unexplained phenomenon of dancing lights that appear in the desert near Marfa after dark. The viewing area is east of town. 
  • Big Bend Region: Marfa is a great base for exploring Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park, offering hiking, biking, stargazing, and stunning desert landscapes.
  • McDonald Observatory: Located in the nearby Davis Mountains, this observatory offers opportunities for stargazing and learning about astronomy.
  • Davis Mountains State Park: Enjoy hiking trails with scenic views of the rugged Texas landscape.
  • Chinati Hot Springs: Relax and rejuvenate in natural mineral springs located in the nearby town of Ruidosa

Presidio, Texas

Presidio, Texas is a vibrant border town nestled in the heart of the Big Bend region, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and outdoor recreation.   It's a great base for exploring the vast landscapes and unique attractions of West Texas.


Presidio is the western gateway to Big Bend Ranch State Park, Fort Leaton and Big Bend National Park. The famed “River Road”, Highway 170 between Presidio and Lajitas, was designated by National Geographic as one of the most scenic drives in North America.  


Presidio's sister city across the border is Ojinaga, Mexico.  Ojinaga offers authentic Mexican cuisine, local shopping, and outdoor adventures. Crossing the border is easy, just remember to bring your passport.
